Your Guide to Nuisance Animal Problems
Armadillos & Moles
Armadillos and Moles can be beneficial because they eat adult insects and larvae. But
as expert diggers, their feeding behavior
can cause serious damage to a lawn or a landscaped area. Armadillo
burrows under driveways and patios can cause structural damage.
A single mole can turn a nice manicured
lawn into a mess of tunnels and dirt piles. If
they remove too much dirt
from under a concrete foundation, the foundation faces the danger of cracking.
Armadillos can also carry and transmit leprosy to
humans. Many wild armadillos have been known to be infected with the bacterium
that causes leprosy (Hansen’s disease). We trap and remove
problem armadillos and moles and remove them to a new home. We
will address
prevention of new visitors. |
Bats
Florida bats are highly beneficial because
they consume tremendous numbers of night-flying insects, including
mosquitoes. Due to increasing urbanization, the number of these natural
roosting sites has been reduced and window shutters, drain pipes,
billboards, roof tiles, and attics have become popular roosting site
substitutes.
Their high mobility, broad distribution, and social
behavior make bats favorable hosts of disease. Due to the risk of
rabies and also due to health problems related to their fecal droppings, bats should
be excluded from inhabited parts of houses.
Bats can also cause
significant noise when in high numbers. Once bats find a suitable
maternity roost, they will stay there and each new generation will
return to that same area. As bats can live up to 20 years, bat colonies
effectively double in size each year that they are left ignored.
Suddenly your small bat problem is a large one.
An obvious sign that a bat colony has taken up residence is when bats
are observed flying in and out of a hole in the structure. When a colony
of bats has taken up residence in your house, we take care to remove
100% of the bats with no harm to these gentle and beneficial creatures.
We ensure that they will not gain entry to your home again, and clean up
the waste they have left behind.

Possums
Possums become a nuisance when they move into urban areas. When they
live in or near inhabited buildings, the animal's smelly nesting habits
and discharge of anal fluids cause offensive odors. Possums can damage
buildings by pushing in screened vents or window screens, scattering
insulation, and chewing electrical wiring. Possums are carriers of many
diseases: tuberculosis, relapsing fever, herpes virus, tularemia,
salmonella, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis,
Chagas Disease, yellow fever, and rabies (rarely).
Opossums are called
generalists because they will eat just about anything they can find.
This can cause problems in areas where humans exist, as possums will get into garbage cans, eat pet food and cultivated
fruits and vegetables. They may prey on poultry and their eggs, and
enter homes through ripped screens or vent and duct systems. We
humanely trap and relocate these animals.

Raccoons
While homeowners many times find these animals cute, raccoons can create havoc around a household or business.
Strewing trash, tipping garbage cans, tearing screen enclosures,
stealing pet food and prying open anything which might hold food.
Raccoons love water, invading ponds
and pools to wash and defecate, and to remove the ornamental fish.
They have no fear of entering homes in search of a meal, through pet
doors and screens, and will return
again and again once they find a food source.
The two illnesses
most commonly associated with raccoons are distemper and rabies, both
potentially fatal and transmissible to pets. Any raccoons seen in daylight hours is cause
for concern.
In urban and other areas where tree dens are lacking, raccoons choose a
wide variety of "cavities" including rock and debris piles, attics,
crawl spaces beneath mobile homes, culverts and sewer drains.
Female raccoons love to live inside of attics, where they will often
bear and raise their young.
A raccoon in your attic can cause major damage. They will nest and bring
in the food they have scavenged which will collect and rot. They will
also leave waste material.
Raccoon trapping can be done safely and humanely
with traps that won't injure the animal.

Rats
Mice and rats are
undesirable in the home and business. Upon inspection we usually
find droppings, urine stains and damage to wires & insulation - good
reasons to eliminate these trespassers. Their
nesting burrows on the outside of a building are often along the
foundation of walls. As the rat family grows, more burrows are built,
resulting in a network of underground tunnels. Inside, rats commonly
nest on the lower levels,
but if the population is too large, they may be found in the attic and
ceiling areas. They typically
enter the walls through small openings adjacent to pipes or through
compromised areas of the roof.
Many people get rats in their home. We
deal with both major rat species: the Norway Rat, which tends to live at
ground level and in the basement of your home, and the Roof Rat, which
tends to live in higher areas, such as your attic. Either will infest
the entire house at times, but we completely eradicate them using proven
methods.
Don't Use Poison: If you use poison in an
attempt to control your rat problem, you are going to wind up with
smelly dead rats in your house. Many people consider this odor worse
than the original problem with live rats! If you have a rat problem,
please call us for professional poison-free rat control. If it's too
late, and you've already poisoned the rats, we can remove the dead one(s)
from the house, and then take care of the remaining rat problem (the
poison is never a permanent cure) properly.

Squirrels
Squirrels can become a nuisance animal both indoors and outdoors.
While in search of food, squirrels can cause a great deal of chewing and
digging damage.
Squirrels love to live in attics, since to a squirrel, an attic is just
a big open tree! They usually come into an attic or crawl space
when an entry point to the outside is not repaired, either through
neglect or by failing to notice it. Broken screens and roof tiles and
gaps between the roof and wall are common squirrel entry points.
Squirrels will often chew their way in, making large holes in the
soffit, fascia boards, vents, or other areas. They also chew once
inside, usually on the woodwork and often on the electrical wires.
Once a squirrel has taken up residence in
your home, it is hard to get rid of them. A squirrel in the
attic creates a lot of noise and a big mess!
Parasites and fecal
droppings are left in your attic, associated with Leptospirosis and
Salmonella. We humanely trap these difficult-to-catch animals and
remove to a more squirrel-friendly environment.

Snakes
Only six of Florida's 44 snake species are venomous:
the eastern coral snake, the southern copperhead, the cottonmouth, the
eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the timber rattlesnake, and the dusky
pygmy rattlesnake. Most Florida snakes are harmless and beneficial and
remove extra rodent populations. Even the venomous species are not
particularly dangerous unless stepped on or otherwise provoked.
Preferring to live under cover, snakes
like the areas underneath raised foundations, porches, sheds and have
even been found in the curled edges of flowerpots! The frequent
sighting of snakes near dwellings or out-buildings may indicate the
presence of rodents. Removal of brush, lumber or other debris
accumulations will discourage both rodents and snakes. Rodent food
sources like chronically spilled bird seed under feeders or pet foods
scraps should also be policed regularly. Call us if you see
potentially poisonous snakes on your property and we will trap and relocate
them.

Bees/Wasps
Causing unsightly hives or dirt cones and many times nesting in
hard-to-reach eaves or attics, bees and wasps live in hives or colonies.
A small hive contains about 20,000 bees, while some larger hives may
have over 100,000 bees. The "killer bee" is actually a type of African
honeybee which can now be found in South Florida. These bees react
very quickly, attack in large numbers, and swarm for long periods of
time.
We can remove
hard-to-reach nests or nests in attics and implement prevention tactics
to eliminate future problems. |
Ducks
Another animal typically thought of as cute, ducks can become a nuisance to communities. They leave fecal droppings
on sidewalks and driveways, which can become a health related issue, and
can be aggressive toward people and dogs. Relocating these birds
to a larger or more fowl-friendly community usually spells relief for
you and the ducks.

Pigeons and Birds
Not only are pigeon droppings unsightly, the uric acid (white material) can
damage buildings, monuments, and the finish on automobiles. Rarely, human health
problems are said to arise from exposure to long-standing accumulations.
Birds can fly into homes or get into attics, and when birds occupy warehouses
or stores they can
defecate on stored goods, creating an expensive problem of contaminated
goods. The most common problem associated with pigeons nesting in
buildings is bird mites invading the human occupied space during or
after the nesting season. Pigeons have also been long associated with disease
organisms transmissible to humans and livestock. As well, the presence of pigeons where food is
prepared or people eat - such as picnic areas and outdoor
restaurants - should be a cause for concern about the spread of Salmonella
bacteria.
Bird Removal can be done safely and humanely with traps that
won't injure the animal.

Other Animals
Unwelcome critters on your property can cause problems of many types.
Whether you have a stray cat problem, a large lizard bunkered down under
your house, or gopher tortoises near your barn,
we can help! Skunks, encroaching bobcats, deer and foxes are all
potential trespassers as our area becomes more and more urbanized.
If you're having a problem with a wild
animal not listed on our website, give us a call. We can investigate the
situation and probably help you. There's almost no wildlife problem that
we can't address! Sometimes it's a simple matter of trapping, but
usually it's a matter of finding out the root cause of the problem and
then eliminating it. If you've got mystery noises in the attic, we
will inspect the attic, look for the types of droppings, the odor, the
type of tracks, and we will easily be able to tell what kind of animal
has invaded your house. We then take the proper measures to trap and
remove the animals, find out how they got into the house, and
permanently seal off those points of entry. Call us with any variety of nuisance animal problem -
we can solve it!

Animal Return Prevention
One of the most important steps of a complete animal damage control
project is performing repairs. If you've got animals in your house, such
as squirrels in your attic, then you've got holes in your house that the
animals can use to get in. Often, the animals are able to utilize
several entry points - this is almost certainly the case with rats - and
the only way to correctly and permanently solve such a wildlife problem
is to perform a complete and detailed inspection of the building, and to
completely and permanently repair and seal off any of these entry holes.
Once the holes are shut, all future animals are blocked off, and the
problem is permanently solved. No animal control project is complete
without exclusion repairs.

Inspections/Building Cleanups
When animals live in your house or attic, they always leave their waste
behind - this means their urine, excrement, and body oils. They can also
commonly bring in nesting materials, food, and parasites. Some of the
waste can pose a real biohazard and health risk. If we identify that
your home has been contaminated with animal feces or other byproducts,
we can perform full home and attic cleanup and decontamination services.
This not only destroys odor and keeps your home safe, but often goes a
long way in repelling new critters that would otherwise be attracted to
the scent of their own kind in your home.
We start by inspecting the interior, making detailed notations of any
chewed wires, urine marks, feces, nests, and torn air conditioning
ducts which contaminate your living space.
We will then inspect the outside of your home to determine any and all
entry points. We will look on the roof for any holes the animal might
have gnawed and check the soffits for any entry or exits. Remember you
don’t just have
critters living in your house. You have everything
they bring with them, and
everything they leave behind:
disease, parasites, feces,
urine, & anything else they
brought into your home.
|
We also perform dead animal and
carcass removal.
